Testing Methodologies
Electronic Leak Detection — Holiday Testing (Dry, High Voltage)
A non-destructive test using a high voltage DC holiday detector on exposed membranes. Detects pinholes, voids, and discontinuities not visible to the eye. More time-efficient than flood testing and works on vertical surfaces including shower walls and retaining walls. This is the most commonly used method on WI projects.
Electronic Leak Detection — Wet / Vector Mapping (Low Voltage)
A low voltage method that uses water to complete an electrical circuit through membrane breaches. Suitable for existing buildings where membranes are covered. Works over tiles on balconies, podiums, and rooftops. The preferred method for diagnostic applications in commercial buildings and strata complexes.
Flood Testing
Traditional water ponding tests as required for compliance verification. Used when specified by standards or when electronic methods are not appropriate for the membrane type or location.
Ultrasonic Thickness Testing
Non-destructive measurement of dry film thickness to verify membrane application meets standards.
Adhesion Testing
Measures bond strength between membrane and substrate to verify proper adhesion and long-term performance.
Moisture Reading
Measures substrate moisture content to determine suitability for membrane application or diagnose water ingress.
Thermal Photography
Infrared thermography identifies moisture presence and temperature differentials behind surfaces without destructive investigation.
The right test depends on the membrane type, location, and application. Electronic leak detection alone has different approaches depending on the situation. Our team recommends the most appropriate method for each project.
